Volunteering with Roots & Shoots: Growth, nature, and community

As part of FRP’s London CSR committee, I’ve had the incredible opportunity to serve as the Environmental Charity Lead. This week, I visited Roots & Shoots, an inspiring charity nestled in Kennington, South London. Their mission? To empower young Londoners with Education, Health, and Care Plans through vocational and educational opportunities, all while fostering a deep connection with nature.

Whilst walking through their one-acre site, I quickly realised that this wasn’t just another green space, it was a sanctuary for learning, healing, and discovery. From their wildflower meadow, bursting with colour and life, to the horticultural areas, where hands-on experiences provide young people with essential skills, Roots & Shoots is a place where growth happens in more ways than one.

Nature as therapy

Beyond their work in education, the charity plays a crucial role in supporting vulnerable individuals. Their NHS therapy group provides refugees and asylum seekers suffering from PTSD with a safe space to heal, offering the therapeutic benefits of nature in their recovery journey.
Roots & Shoots also works closely with autistic and special needs children, allowing them to explore and engage with the natural world in meaningful ways. The environment here is designed to be immersive and sensory-rich, encouraging curiosity and confidence-building in a safe, nurturing setting.

Wild discoveries

During my visit, I found myself marveling at the tadpole tanks, a hub of tiny life teeming with transformation. As we explored further, we encountered newts, frogs, and even slow worms, a thrilling discovery that underscored the site's biodiversity and commitment to conservation. Every corner of Roots & Shoots seemed to hold something magical, whether in the soil, the water, or the people who dedicate their energy to making this place thrive.

Why this work matters

Roots & Shoots embodies the power of community-driven change. By blending education, environmental stewardship, and compassionate outreach, they’re not only providing young people with the skills and confidence to prepare for the world of work, but they’re also cultivating a space where healing, inclusion, and sustainability intersect.

As I reflect on this experience, I’m reminded that environmental work isn’t just about protecting nature - it’s about empowering people. It’s about creating pathways for learning, offering comfort to those in need, and reminding us all that even in the heart of London, nature can be a catalyst for change.

Volunteering with Roots & Shoots has reaffirmed my commitment to championing environmental causes that make a real difference. I can’t wait to continue supporting their mission and watching the ripples of impact spread far and wide.
